Last Monday in Poltava’s hospitals and kindergartens began to vaccinate children against poliomyelitis under the additional immunization program, which will take place in three phases and will last until the end of February 6, 2016.

On Wednesday, Igor Kudelych, Deputy Director of the Department of Health Poltava Regional State Administration, in public brought his grandchildren to the children’s clinic for vaccination.

The vaccine is of two types – oral, so-called “live” (in 2 drops) and inactivated – injection (between vaccinations should be a break of 14 days at least).

Ideally, every child should receive three vaccinations during all stages of additional immunization against poliomyelitis.

UNICEF bought French vaccine OPVERO to Ukrainians within $ 3 million funds, assigned by the Canadian Government.

Duration of the first round of vaccination – 3 weeks, following second and third vaccination rounds – 2 weeks. The interval between these stages of vaccination – 1 month.

More on these rounds of vaccination in Poltava told to journalists the head of family medicine outpatient department №10 of municipal institution “Center of the primary health care №2” Tatiana Kabyka. According to her, during last three days they have already vaccinated about three hundred kids with two types of vaccines.

106,100 doses of the oral vaccine with droppers and almost 33 thousand doses of inactivated vaccine and syringes were delivered to Poltava.

Immunization takes place in three rounds: two rounds, from 19 October to 11 November and from 09 November to 23 December – children aged from 2 months to 6 years, third round, from 23 January to 06 February – involving children from 2 months to 10 years.

Poliomyelitis – an infectious disease, which affects the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract and lymphatic system. The disease is the most common cause of children’s physical disabilities. Once the virus, is in the body, it penetrates the nervous system through the blood, affects different parts, mainly motor cells of the spinal cord and motor roots that are responsible for movement. It spreads by airborne droplets (sneezing, coughing) or by type of intestinal infection (through the feces of patients).
