The concept of self-help for internally displaced persons was presented in Lubny

IMG_3635On 23rd of September in the Central Regional Library of Lubny named after V. Malik was presented the concept of self-help for internally displaced persons from the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine and Crimea. Activists of Poltava Regional Youth Public Organization “Your World” will involve internally displaced persons to the trainings, active participation in the life of local communities and conduct integrating measures to reduce the negative effects of internal displacement for those who are forced to leave their places of residence and for the local residents.

Alexander Chepur, Project Manager believes that the main problem for IDPs today is to learn to model their lives for their existence and comfortable environment. The idea of the project belongs to IDPs who have been trained under the program of the British Council in Ukraine “Active citizens”. The project offers internally displaced people to create and engage in self-help groups.

During communication with the project team, volunteers and experts from IDPs demonstrated previous experience of similar forms of cooperation in Poltava region.

The concept of self-help states that in the group is much easier to change behavior: it is triggered by the principle of “equal – to equal”, as the team consists of people who have similar problems, similar life scenarios and common life goals. Joining the group, participants receive both negative and positive experiences to help to the others to find the right solution.

Julia Kuzovkova, the IDP from Lugansk, is actively involved in the development of self-help project. She is convinced from her own experience that the group gives a feeling of unity, the confidence that you are not alone, that your problem interests the others.

“In the group one can find understanding, because there are some points that can be understood only by those who had to deal with such difficulties” – confirms psychologist Julia Poda.

At the presentation there was a photo exhibition “Accents”. The snapshots were taken from the Internet. They clearly call attention to the major problems of internally displaced persons.

According to event organizers, the project “Strengthening of self-help among internally displaced persons and their involvement in the social life of the host community” is funded by the European Union in the framework of international technical assistance project “Ukrainian regional platform of public initiatives” which is administered by the Public Organization “MART” and under support of the project called “Active citizens” of British Council in Ukraine. It will be working for six months.
